Satish Pillai is billed as a Bay Area singer-songwriter-scientist. A researcher by the same name studies HIV cure strategies and blood-borne infection surveillance at the Vitalant Research Institute in San Francisco, according to the institute's website.
On Saturday, Aug. 22, Pillai will be onstage at Studio Fourth Street in downtown San Rafael, leading his folk-rock band through a set of original tunes and classic rock reinterpretations.
The Satish Collective takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. as part of TwilightLIVE!, the recurring live music series hosted at the venue at 1569 Fourth St. The show runs until 9:30 p.m. Admission is a $20 suggested donation, and refreshments will be available.
Pillai, who holds a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology from UC San Diego, composes what the venue's event page calls improvisation-infused folk rock, blending original compositions with fresh takes on the classic rock canon. He also serves as a senior investigator in viral pathogenesis at Vitalant and holds an associate adjunct professor appointment at UCSF's Department of Laboratory Medicine.
The group is no stranger to the TwilightLIVE! stage. A January 2024 listing on KRON4's community calendar shows The Satish Collective performed in the series' winter run that year.
Studio Fourth Street has kept a steady rhythm of live music through 2026 under the TwilightLIVE! banner, hosting Americana group Viejos Amigos in April, fingerstyle guitarists Teja Gerken and Doug Young with Noctambule in May, and a Melissa Muller collaboration in July.
Residents looking for a full weekend of music can return the following night: Jazz in the Neighborhood presents pianist Ken Cook on Sunday, Aug. 23, with a $25 suggested donation.
