A 20-year-old Richmond man was arrested on suspicion of murder after police said he fatally stabbed a coworker at a San Rafael shopping center Monday, Oct. 12.
Police identified the man as Justin Amilcar Gutierrez-Navarette. The stabbing followed a dispute between employees at a business in the Northgate One Shopping Center, the San Rafael Police Department said in a press release Tuesday, Oct. 13.
Police received an emergency call shortly after 1 p.m. reporting an unconscious man in the 700 block of Las Gallinas Avenue.
First responders found the victim with an apparent stab wound and began emergency treatment. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
Investigators determined from the victim's clothing that he worked at a business inside the shopping center. Police allege Gutierrez-Navarette and the victim had an ongoing dispute that escalated into a physical confrontation on Oct. 12, during which Gutierrez-Navarette stabbed him. The victim left through the back of the business and collapsed outside, according to the department.
Police said the victim’s name was being withheld until relatives could be notified. The Marin County Coroner’s Office will release his identity after those notifications.
Shortly after the investigation began, Gutierrez-Navarette contacted police and arranged to turn himself in. Detectives interviewed him and subsequently arrested him, the department said. He was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of murder. Police said there are no outstanding suspects in connection with the homicide.
The department praised bystanders who found the victim, called 911, started CPR and provided first aid. The department also expressed condolences to the victim's family.
