A documentary about late Marin gymnast Tamarin Luchessa screens at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Smith Rafael Film Center.
"This Bright Light," directed by former Marin resident Alexandra Lexton and executive produced by Luchessa's mother, Cindy Reynolds, follows a young woman whose name combines "Mount Tamalpais" and "Marin" and who pursued gymnastics, fashion and dance before her death at 42. The San Rafael encore screening gives local audiences another chance to see a film that sold out a showing at the 49th Mill Valley Film Festival, according to the Marin Independent Journal.
Luchessa was a national champion in rhythmic gymnastics at age 12, according to the Marin Independent Journal. She studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and danced hip-hop. The IJ article quotes festival program notes describing a teenage diabetes diagnosis that interrupted her Olympic ambitions and subsequent medical crises, including a kidney and pancreas transplant.
The film blends vintage video of Luchessa, reenactments by local actors and interviews with Reynolds, Luchessa's gymnastics coach and friends. Mount Tamalpais appears throughout as a backdrop, the IJ reported.
Reynolds speaks in the film about how her daughter's diagnosis of a mild traumatic brain injury inspired her Mill Valley business, NeuroFit @ Jyzen, and her interest in neuroscience. She also consults mediums on screen, exploring what the film's listing describes as connections "across life and death."
Lexton, who now lives on an apple farm in Sebastopol, co-wrote and sings the film's theme song, "Devotion," with Reynolds and the Brothers Koren. This is the fourth Lexton film shown at the Mill Valley Film Festival, according to the IJ.
"The message is universal, but it will really resonate with our community," Lexton told the Marin Independent Journal ahead of the screening.
Lexton plans to attend the Wednesday screening. Tickets cost $15.75 to $17.75, according to the IJ’s Oct. 12 report, and are available on the Smith Rafael Film Center website. The venue is at 1118 Fourth St. in San Rafael.
