San Rafael voters can hear from City Council and state Assembly candidates at a forum on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at San Rafael High School.

San Rafael Heritage, a nonprofit preservation group, is promoting the forum, which is co-sponsored by the Federation of San Rafael Neighborhoods and the Point San Pedro Road Coalition. The forum starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Commons Building, which faces Third Street and the parking lot. The school is at 150 Third St.

The forum comes ahead of the Nov. 3 general election. San Rafael's District 3 City Council seat is contested, while District 2 Councilmember Eli Hill is seeking reelection.

In District 3, Councilmember Maribeth Bushey's term is ending. Robert Sandoval and Daryoush Davidi have filed for the seat, the Marin Independent Journal reported in August. In District 2, Councilmember Eli Hill filed to seek reelection as of the Aug. 8 report. The filing period was extended to Aug. 12 for any race where an incumbent with an expiring term had not filed.

The Nov. 3 ballot also includes roughly 20 local measures in Marin County and 14 statewide measures, according to Marin County Registrar of Voters Natalie Adona.

The Assembly race on the forum's agenda has not been specified by organizers. Assemblymember Damon Connolly, a Democrat from San Rafael, is running for State Senate District 2, leaving his Assembly seat open. Connolly endorsed Rohnert Park Councilmember Jackie Elward to succeed him, the Marin IJ reported Aug. 13.

Amy Likover, president of San Rafael Heritage, said the forum ties into the group's broader push for historic preservation in city planning. "I share these events because municipal priorities must include historic preservation," Likover said in the group's September newsletter.

Likover has been vocal about preservation concerns as development proposals reshape downtown. In an Aug. 26 Marin IJ report on a proposed 200-apartment building at 901 E St., she said community members should be heard about the historic nature of the site.

San Rafael Heritage is also promoting a Housing Confab on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom, co-sponsored by the same two groups. Connolly and Mayor Kate Colin are scheduled to discuss state housing policy and its effect on local planning.
