Authorities identified the man who died after an Oct. 12 stabbing at San Rafael’s Northgate One Shopping Center as Mathew Ryan Lambdin, 27, of San Rafael.

The Marin County Sheriff's Office Coroner Division released Lambdin's identity on Oct. 15. Justin Amilcar Gutierrez-Navarette, 20, of Richmond was arrested on suspicion of murder, according to San Rafael police.

Gutierrez-Navarette appeared Wednesday, Oct. 14, in Marin County Superior Court. A public defender asked the judge to postpone the arraignment while the office determines whether Gutierrez-Navarette qualifies for its services, according to the Marin Independent Journal. The judge agreed and set the arraignment for Monday, Oct. 19.

He remained in custody without bail at the Marin County Jail as of Oct. 15, the newspaper reported.

As we reported Oct. 13, police said a dispute between coworkers escalated into a confrontation during which Gutierrez-Navarette stabbed Lambdin. Lambdin left through the back of the business and collapsed outside. He died after being taken to a hospital.

Gutierrez-Navarette later contacted police and arranged to surrender, the department said.

Sgt. Justin Graham declined to describe the nature of the dispute but said it was work-related, the Marin IJ reported.

The store where both men worked is an authorized AT&T retailer owned by Blue Link Wireless, a Michigan-based company, according to an AT&T spokesperson quoted by the Marin IJ. AT&T said it does not own the store. Blue Link representatives could not be reached by the Marin IJ as of Oct. 15.

The coroner said a forensic examination with routine toxicology testing has been completed, but the official cause and manner of death remain pending while the police and coroner investigations continue.
