A 72-year-old Petaluma man was booked into Marin County Jail after San Rafael police said he threatened to shoot and kill employees at a Third Street Citibank branch, then was found with two unserialized rifles when detectives arrested him a week later.

San Rafael police arrested Frear Stephen Schmid on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and said he was booked on suspicion of felony criminal threats and illegal possession of unserialized firearms, according to an SRPD press release authored by Sgt. Justin Graham.

The incident began Tuesday, Aug. 18, just after 1:10 p.m., when SRPD received an emergency call from the Citibank on Third Street in downtown San Rafael. Schmid had gone to the bank to address an issue with his account, police said. When employees asked him to remain calm, he became more upset and threatened to shoot and kill them.

Employees asked Schmid several times to leave, but police said he continued making threats before eventually leaving on his own. Bank employees then locked the doors as a safety precaution.

Officers reviewed surveillance video and confirmed Schmid's identity. Detectives took over the investigation and learned he had a gun registered to him. They obtained an arrest warrant for criminal threats and a Gun Violence Restraining Order before going to his Petaluma residence on Aug. 25.

Schmid was arrested without incident, police said. During the arrest, detectives found several firearms in his possession, including two unserialized rifles. Under the Gun Violence Restraining Order, detectives seized all firearms in his possession.

Schmid was booked into Marin County Jail, police said. The release did not list an arraignment date.
