Friends of China Camp expected about 400 visitors to pass through China Camp Village on Saturday, Aug. 22, during the annual Heritage Day Festival celebrating the park's Chinese shrimp-fishing history, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

The four-hour event ran from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 100 China Camp Village Road. Admission was free with an RSVP. The attendance figure was an organizer estimate, not a confirmed final count.

Marin Chinese Cultural Association drummers opened the program, with San Rafael resident Greg Chuck on the large drum. Lion dancers and a dragon dance followed, along with live music, food, arts and crafts and kite-making for children. Seven-year-old Amy Trofymets of Corte Madera was among the children who made and launched kites during the festival, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

The Grace Quan, a 42-foot replica of a 19th-century Chinese shrimp-fishing junk, arrived at the village waterfront during the festival. The vessel was built by National Park Service volunteers and staff at China Camp State Park in 2003.

The Grace Quan is named for Grace Quan, the late mother of Frank Quan, the last original shrimp fisherman to live at China Camp Village. Frank Quan remained in his cabin at the park until his death at age 90 in 2016, according to Friends of China Camp.

The festival connected visitors with a period when roughly three million pounds of shrimp were harvested from San Pablo Bay each year in the late 1800s and early 20th century. China Camp Village reached its peak in the 1880s, when nearly 500 people lived there.

Five organizations collaborated on the festival: Friends of China Camp, the Marin Chinese Cultural Association, the Redwood Empire Chinese Cultural Association, California State Parks and the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. Volunteers also served Chinese food during the event.

China Camp State Park is a 1,514-acre preserve on the shore of San Pablo Bay in San Rafael. The park preserves the only one of more than two dozen former Chinese shrimping camps around San Francisco and San Pablo bays as a historic site. Friends of China Camp has operated the park since 2012.
