Point San Pedro Road through China Camp State Park will close the morning of Oct. 3 for the SGRAIL Triathlon, blocking a key San Rafael weekend route for four hours.
The closure runs from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m. on a Saturday, according to a traffic alert from the Point San Pedro Road Coalition posted Sept. 17. The road will be closed from the east entrance of Biscayne Drive through China Camp State Park. Eastbound lanes between Biscayne Drive and Riviera Drive will also be closed, though westbound access on that stretch stays open.
China Camp will be inaccessible during the closure window.
Peacock Gap Golf Course remains reachable via Riviera Drive, and the coalition said all residents in the affected area will be able to get to and from their homes.
The Oct. 3 race is an Olympic-distance triathlon based at McNears Beach Park. It features a 1,500-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike course on Point San Pedro Road and a 10-kilometer run. Gates open at 7 a.m., with the race starting at 9 a.m., according to the SGRAIL event page.
On Oct. 4, a Sunday, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers will be stationed at Point San Pedro Road and Biscayne Drive from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They will help athletes cross the road during a trail half marathon covering 13.1 miles through China Camp State Park and the Marin hills, with roughly 1,251 feet of elevation gain. The coalition's notice did not specify whether any lanes would be closed Oct. 4 beyond the CHP crossing assist.
The event, formerly known as the Endurance Festival, has joined SGRAIL, a destination endurance series founded by triathlete Jan Frodeno. Organizers said the triathlon and half marathon are combined into one weekend to reduce the overall impact on residents and the park.
The coalition said detour signs, police and volunteers will manage traffic along the course. Residents near the route may experience delays of a few minutes during the closure windows.
Drivers who use Point San Pedro Road to reach eastern San Rafael neighborhoods should plan alternate routes before 8:30 a.m. or after 12:30 p.m. on both days.
