San Rafael High School inducted former teacher Bill Costello and alumnus Harry Miller into its Hall of Honor on Monday, Sept. 28, opening the school's "DAWGChella" Homecoming week.

The ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Hayes Theater also recognized Pam and Tom "Pat" Collins with the Golden Bulldog Award for their support of the school. Pam and Tom graduated from San Rafael High in 1974 and 1973, respectively, and volunteered "above and beyond" for the school from 2004 to 2010, according to the SRHS Alumni Association. Principal Joe Ryan Dominguez opened the ceremony to the entire community, according to the school's weekly bulletin published Sept. 24.

Costello served San Rafael High as a teacher, coach and mentor from 1967 to 2001, a 1958 graduate of the school himself, according to the SRHS Alumni Association.

Miller, a 1961 graduate, was a two-time MVP on the tennis team, which won three county championships. He also played baseball and football, served as senior class vice president and led the Spirit Club. After graduating from the University of Santa Clara and earning a master's degree from Northwestern University, Miller served as a U.S. Army major in Vietnam.

Miller's ties to San Rafael High run deep. His father coached and taught at the school for 42 years, from 1932 to 1974. The football field, Miller Field, is named after him. Miller's wife, Suzanne E. Staley, also graduated in the Class of 1961, and their two children attended the school.

Miller went on to lead the SRHS Alumni Association as president from 2008 to 2025. On the association's website, he has described contributing to the development of the community's youth as his highest priority.

The Golden Bulldog Award honors a volunteer who has gone above and beyond for the school. Past recipients include Gary "Pops" McFadden in 2023, Gregory Leonard Szot in 2024 and Marylou and Dan Murphy in 2025.

The Hall of Honor was established in 2009 to recognize graduates, teachers, coaches, parents and volunteers who have made lasting contributions to San Rafael High, the oldest high school serving Marin County, according to the SRHS Alumni Association. The program was inactive from 2020 through 2022 due to COVID-19.

Homecoming week continues with a parade down Fourth Street on Friday, Oct. 2, starting at 4 p.m. Varsity football hosts Hercules High School at 7 p.m. that evening, with Homecoming royalty crowned at halftime. The Homecoming dance is Saturday, Oct. 3, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the SRHS gym. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased by Friday, Oct. 2, at the student store.
