Cyclists and pedestrians who use the SMART Pathway in San Rafael will need to find another route starting Friday, Sept. 18.

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is closing the pathway between Andersen Drive and Rice Drive for maintenance through Sunday, Sept. 20. The closure runs from approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, according to a city notice by Christina Leung posted Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The pathway will reopen each evening after crews finish. If work wraps up early on any given day, the path may reopen ahead of schedule.

Detour route

During closure hours, pathway users should follow the sidewalk and bike lane from Rice Drive to Du Bois Street and then to Andersen Drive. Signs will be posted along the pathway directing users to the detour.

What's being done

SMART describes the project as "Maintenance of Way work," which includes cleanup and maintenance along the creek adjacent to the pathway. The broader maintenance effort began Wednesday, Sept. 16, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 20, though the pathway itself only closes during the final three days.

The agency has not specified what infrastructure is being repaired or what prompted the work.
