Older adults in San Rafael can sign up for a free week of falls prevention classes, expert talks and resources at Vivalon's Healthy Aging Campus starting Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The nonprofit, at 999 Third Street, is hosting Falls Prevention Week through Friday, Sept. 25. The programming coincides with national Falls Prevention Awareness Week and is open to the community at no cost, according to Vivalon's event page.

All events are free.

Vivalon instructor Leela Satyendra, who teaches Tai Chi and Qi Gong at the campus, described the changes she sees in participants as "transformation," according to a Sept. 11 article on Vivalon's website. She said one participant went from sitting through an entire class to standing for all of Tai Chi and most of Qi Gong over the course of a year.

Strength in Balance instructor Roberta Dillon sees a similar arc. Participants who may not have exercised in years build from sitting to standing to moving for longer stretches, Dillon said in the same article. She described the realization participants reach as: "YES I CAN."

Participant Mimi, whose last name was not provided, said in the article that the classes are "… where we regain strength we thought we had lost, where we rebuild confidence after falls or injuries, and where we find community, hope, and joy in movement again."

Marin County Supervisor Stephanie Moulton-Peters flagged Vivalon's Falls Prevention Week in her August 2026 Southern Marin Scoop newsletter, listing it among upcoming community events.

In a 2026 survey of more than 210 Vivalon members, 86% said the organization's programs have a positive effect on their lives, and 83% said the programs improve their overall quality of life, according to results posted on Vivalon's site.
