San Rafael's police oversight committee will hear a report on officers in local schools when it meets Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m.

Detective Genesis Ortiz, a school resource officer with the San Rafael Police Department (SRPD), is scheduled to present to the Police Advisory and Accountability Committee (PAAC) at City Hall Council Chambers, 1400 Fifth Ave. The meeting agenda lists the report as the sole substantive item, with a recommendation to "receive report."

The presentation follows about two years of discussion about SRPD's role in schools. The committee's 2024 annual report noted that SRPD had been in discussions with the San Rafael City Schools District about potential partnerships. Five of the committee's seven members voiced support for some form of police presence in schools during a meeting on youth and policing.

PAAC member Daniel Alm urged the City Council, according to the committee's 2024 annual report, "to build a partnership … have the SRPD/City work with the board of trustees and have youth involvement in the decision-making process."

The annual report also noted that any formal agreement between SRPD and the school district would require approval from both the City Council and the school board.

The City Council created the seven-member PAAC in June 2023 to advise on police department policies, practices and community relations. The committee falls under the City Manager's Office, with Assistant City Manager Angela Robinson Piñon as staff contact. It meets the third Wednesday of each month at City Hall.
