A 30-year-old San Rafael man carrying a loaded shotgun was arrested on a residential walkway in Larkspur early Monday, Sept. 21, after a community member called police.

The caller reported seeing someone with what appeared to be a rifle just before 4:30 a.m. on a path connecting South Eliseo Drive and Ladderman Lane, near the north side of Corte Madera Creek, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

Officers from the Central Marin Police Authority went to the scene and set up a perimeter at both entrances to the walkway, Patch reported. They arrived within three minutes of the call, according to Patch, citing police.

Officers found the man carrying a shotgun, not a rifle. They repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon. He eventually complied and was taken into custody.

The shotgun was loaded with incorrect ammunition, the Central Marin Police Authority said in a statement. Officers rendered the firearm inoperable at the scene.

Police also allege the man had documents and property belonging to multiple other people in his possession.

Investigators determined he was on Marin County probation and had an outstanding arrest warrant in a case involving allegations of loitering or prowling, according to the Marin Independent Journal. The Central Marin Police Authority described the man as unhoused.

He was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, carrying a loaded firearm in public, misappropriation of lost property and violating probation. He remained in custody as of Sept. 22, according to the Marin Independent Journal. SFGate also reported on the arrest.
