A 43-year-old San Rafael man is in jail without bail after police say he struck another man with a shovel on Irwin Street on Tuesday evening, July 14.

Melvin Enrique Delgado Pacheco was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and violating his terms of probation, San Rafael Police Sgt. Justin Graham told the Marin Independent Journal.

The attack happened at about 7 p.m. Graham described it as carried out "randomly and suddenly." The two men apparently knew each other but had not argued or fought beforehand, Graham said.

There was no confrontation or dispute leading up to the incident, according to Graham. The attack appeared unprovoked.

Officers detained Delgado Pacheco nearby after the incident and recovered the shovel he allegedly used. He was already on probation at the time of the alleged assault, though the nature of that probation has not been disclosed.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police have not released his name or described the extent of his injuries.

Delgado Pacheco is being held at the Marin County Jail with no bail amount set, according to booking records. The assault with a deadly weapon charge and the probation violation together appear to have factored into the no-bail hold.

No court date or arraignment has been announced for Delgado Pacheco. The San Rafael Police Department has not issued its own press release on the incident, and the underlying offense behind Delgado Pacheco's existing probation has not been made public.
