San Rafael High School students have until Wednesday, Sept. 9, to apply for fall internships through a new School to Career program, according to the school's weekly newsletter.
Lindy Burgon, the school's new School to Career liaison, encouraged students to apply for available internship listings, which include roles at local dental and orthodontic offices, a senior living community, small businesses and nonprofits. The newsletter describes internships as a way to gain job experience, learn practical skills, build a professional network and strengthen college applications. Internships are scheduled to begin in early October.

The School to Career Partnership is a Marin County Office of Education initiative involving more than 200 businesses and organizations. More than 2,000 students countywide took part in activities last year, according to program materials posted by Terra Linda High. San Rafael High, which enrolls about 1,330 students in grades 9 through 12, is participating for the first time this fall with Burgon leading the effort on campus.

The newsletter also introduced two staff members families will see regularly this year.
Lissa Ferreira, who joined San Rafael High last semester to lead the drama program, is also serving as attendance secretary. She is directing three upcoming plays and learning Spanish, with a goal of connecting with Spanish-speaking students and families.
"There is no substitute for being present," Ferreira said in the newsletter.
Debbie Trimble, an administrative assistant with 18 years at the school, helps manage attendance among her other duties, which include supporting athletics and the nurse's station. The newsletter reminded families that September is Attendance Awareness Month and asked them to call the attendance office at (415) 485-2335 or bring a note whenever a student is absent. Trimble separately asked families to call ahead when students have daytime appointments so passes can be ready.

Back to School Night is Thursday, Sept. 10. The WeAreSR Board Meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 22. Homecoming Spirit Week begins Monday, Sept. 28, followed by the homecoming game and parade on Friday, Oct. 2, and the homecoming dance on Saturday, Oct. 3.
