The San Rafael Fire Department will hold a free tribute at Lauren's Place on Fourth Street on Friday, Sept. 11, marking 25 years since the 2001 attacks.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the small memorial next door to San Rafael Joe's restaurant at 931 Fourth St. Visitors can read profiles of each of the 343 New York City firefighters who died in the attacks and join a moment of silence at the top of every hour. The city's announcement says the tribute is open to all ages.

San Rafael Fire Chief Abraham Roman said in the city's Aug. 20 press release, "This is an opportunity for our community to come together, remember those we lost, and honor the courage and selflessness demonstrated by first responders … Their sacrifice continues to remind us of the importance of service, community, and looking out for one another."

San Rafael firefighters and public safety personnel will be on site throughout the four-hour tribute. Nearly 3,000 people died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Lauren's Place carries a direct San Rafael connection to that day. The memorial honors Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, a 38-year-old San Rafael resident who was pregnant when she died aboard United Airlines Flight 93. Grandcolas was flying home from her grandmother's funeral in New Jersey, according to the National Park Service. She had been a consultant, writer and University of Texas graduate with 15 years of marketing and sales experience. Her sisters later completed and published her unfinished book, "You Can Do It: The Merit Badge Handbook for Grown-Up Girls."

The San Rafael Rotary Club officially adopted Lauren's Place in January 2025, committing to beautify the space with fresh plantings and maintain it monthly, according to the Downtown San Rafael Business Improvement District.
