San Rafael residents will wait at least two more weeks for their next City Council session after the city canceled the Monday, August 3 meeting without explanation.

The cancellation notice, posted to the city's website on Thursday, July 30, listed no agenda items for the 6 p.m. session. No city official has publicly commented on why the meeting was scrapped. The next council meeting is now set for Monday, August 17 at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

The August 3 cancellation is at least the third time the council has gone dark in 2026. The city also canceled its July 6 meeting earlier this summer. And the pattern isn't new: the council canceled its first August meeting last year, too, on August 4, 2025.

The council isn't the only city body taking extended breaks. The Planning Commission canceled its July 28 session, its seventh cancellation of 2026, leaving that body without a public hearing since at least late May.

With no public forum until August 17, residents who want to weigh in on city business can contact City Clerk Lindsay Lara's office at (415) 485-3066 or visit cityofsanrafael.org/contact-city-clerk. The office is at 1400 Fifth Ave., Room 209, and is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday visits are by appointment only.

Council meetings are held in the Council Chambers at 1400 Fifth Avenue and streamed on the city's YouTube channel and via Zoom. The Planning Commission is next scheduled to meet Tuesday, August 11.
