Westbound lanes on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge will close overnight Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11, as Caltrans crews continue construction on the Open Road Tolling Project.

The closures affect San Rafael-bound traffic on I-580 crossing from the East Bay.

511 SF Bay posted a closure alert for Tuesday and Wednesday nights, with lanes shut down from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

A separate Caltrans District 4 advisory published Sept. 4 lists nightly closures Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the corridor between Regatta Boulevard and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Toll Plaza. The difference in posted hours means drivers should plan for possible lane restrictions as early as 7 p.m. on any night from Sept. 8 through Sept. 11.

What's being built

The closures are part of the Open Road Tolling Project, which will replace existing toll booths with electronic tolling infrastructure. Caltrans District 4 listed the week's work as roadway barrier construction on westbound I-580, toll plaza construction, electrical and underground infrastructure installation, drainage work, demolition of curb and gutter on Stenmark Drive, bike lane work and removal of light poles near the toll plaza.

The project also includes a new lane configuration for westbound I-580 through the toll plaza and realignment of the Stenmark Drive on-ramp.

The project is tentatively scheduled for completion in summer 2027, according to Caltrans District 4.

More closures ahead

A separate deck maintenance closure will shut down westbound Lane #2 on the bridge's upper deck Saturday, Sept. 12, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to a Caltrans maintenance advisory. Westbound Lane #1 and the bike path will stay open during that closure.

Cyclists should note the bike trail between Marine Street and Stenmark Drive will close overnight Thursday, Sept. 10, and Friday, Sept. 11.

Additional construction is scheduled from Sept. 15 through Sept. 25, including continued median barrier work and drainage system installation on Stenmark Drive.

Work zone details

Caltrans has reduced the speed limit by 10 mph through the construction zone. Changeable message signs along the corridor will provide advance notice of closures. All work is weather dependent. Schedules are subject to change.
