A pedestrian was critically injured Thursday, July 23, after a minivan struck and pinned him in the Burger King parking lot at 969 Francisco Boulevard East in east San Rafael.
San Rafael firefighters responded to the scene around 10 a.m. and found the man trapped beneath the vehicle. Crews lifted the minivan to free him and performed CPR before paramedics transported him to a local hospital, San Rafael Police Sgt. Justin Graham told the Marin Independent Journal.
"The driver is cooperating with the investigation," Graham said.
The driver remained at the scene. Police said drugs and alcohol are not suspected as factors in the crash.
The victim's identity has not been released, and no update on his condition was available as of Thursday, July 23. Police have not said whether the minivan was moving through the lot or pulling into a space when it struck the pedestrian.
Graham said the incident remains under investigation. The San Rafael Police Department has not issued a press release about the crash or announced a timeline for releasing additional details.
The Burger King sits on Francisco Boulevard East near Highway 101 in a commercial area with several restaurants and retail businesses.
Earlier incident
The crash is the second time in roughly five weeks that a vulnerable road user has been seriously injured in a collision with a vehicle in San Rafael. On Monday, June 15, a bicyclist suffered major injuries after a crash with a vehicle at Second Street and Marquard Avenue downtown. In that case, the driver also remained at the scene and cooperated with police, and drugs and alcohol were not factors, Graham said at the time.
San Rafael police have not drawn a connection between the two incidents, which occurred under different circumstances.
