A Marin fashion brand whose prints hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art is bringing a free retrospective to the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Civic Center in San Rafael.

"When Simon Met Ralph: A Retrospective" opens Thursday, Oct. 1, and runs through Jan. 7, 2027, on the first and third floors of the Marin County Civic Center at 3501 Civic Center Drive.

Admission is free.

The show features work by Simon Ungless and Jody Niederkohr, co-founders of When Simon Met Ralph (WSMR), a sustainable luxury label based in Marin. Every piece the brand produces is one of a kind, built from vintage, deadstock or discarded garments rather than new fabric.

On display: men's suit jackets printed with WSMR's signature feather pattern, lace dresses treated with a rubberized overlay, felted wall hangings and never-before-seen graphic wall prints. The artists selected the works in collaboration with the Marin Cultural Association.

"If the exhibit were exclusively archival items, it wouldn't be an accurate reflection of us, our process, or our brand, because we're always moving forward creatively," Niederkohr said in a Marin County news release.

The exhibit also includes ceramic pieces by Sausalito-based artist Susan McKinney, an industrial designer turned ceramicist. For the collaboration, McKinney and WSMR sourced glass beads from vintage 1920s dresses and embedded them into clay forms. Fired at about 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit, the glass melted into the stone, producing variegated patterns of color across McKinney's geometric clay shapes. The forms draw inspiration from the Civic Center building itself.

Ungless, who lives in Larkspur, met Alexander McQueen as a fellow design student at Central Saint Martins in London. His 1995 print work for McQueen's "The Birds" collection is part of the Met's permanent collection, according to the Marin County news release.

The Civic Center show follows Ungless's solo exhibition, "A Life in Print," at the University of Wisconsin's Furlong Gallery in February and March 2026. WSMR also completed a commission for the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2026.
