The Marin County Sheriff's Office deployed a drone Tuesday, Aug. 4, to help hunt a gunman who fatally shot a 31-year-old man in Novato's Ignacio neighborhood. The suspect remains at large.

Travis Lee Wine was shot just after 10 a.m. outside an apartment complex on the 400 block of Alameda del Prado, just south of Ignacio Boulevard, Novato police Lt. Alan Bates told the Marin Independent Journal. Multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunfire. Officers found Wine with a life-threatening gunshot wound, and paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he died.

The Novato Police Department said in an Instagram post that the shooting was a targeted attack believed to be gang-related. Investigators said Wine and the suspect knew each other.

The suspect fled on foot toward Calle Arboleda before officers arrived, triggering a large-scale search. The Sheriff's Office drone joined a California Highway Patrol aircraft and a Vallejo Police Department K-9 unit in sweeping the area. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for residents on Calle Arboleda and Alameda del Prado and closed Alameda del Prado from Ignacio Boulevard to Posada Del Sol. The shelter-in-place was lifted around 2:30 p.m.

No arrest has been made. The manhunt was continuing as of Wednesday, Aug. 5, according to the Press Democrat.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, wearing dark pants, a gray hooded sweatshirt and a black ski mask. He was last seen running near Calle Arboleda and Alameda del Prado.

Eugene Cooper, an Alameda del Prado resident who moved to Marin from St. Louis, was blocked from returning home Tuesday morning while officers searched the area. "We don't have problems like that," Cooper told the Press Democrat. "I'm not nervous. I'm just minding my business."

The killing is Novato's first homicide of 2026. The city's last homicide occurred in 2023. All of Marin County reported seven homicides in 2025, according to data from the Marin County Sheriff's Office Coroner Division.

Chief Deputy Coroner Roger Fielding said Wednesday, Aug. 5, that Wine's official cause and manner of death are pending the investigation's results.
