Marin County is asking residents to identify accessibility problems at county facilities, parks, and digital services as it updates its federally required plan for serving people with disabilities.
The first of three virtual open houses starts Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 5 p.m. Two more follow on Wednesday, August 12, at 5 p.m. and Saturday, August 29, at 1 p.m. All run one hour on Zoom.
The county is updating its Americans with Disabilities Act Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan, a two-part process required under Title II of the ADA for any government with 50 or more employees. The self-evaluation examines how well county programs, facilities, parks, digital services, transportation infrastructure, and communication practices serve people with disabilities. The transition plan that follows will spell out specific fixes and a timeline for making them. Under federal law, there is no grandfather clause exempting older buildings from ADA requirements.
San Rafael residents interact with these county services daily. The county's main offices sit at 3501 Civic Center Drive, and the Civic Center campus, county parks, and library branches all fall within the review's scope.
How to participate
The county laid out several ways to weigh in, according to its August 3 news release:
- Virtual open houses: Wednesday, August 5 (Zoom ID 876 4448 9264), Wednesday, August 12 (Zoom ID 825 4704 0770), and Saturday, August 29 (Zoom ID 824 7332 7112). Each session will include American Sign Language and Certified Deaf Interpreter services plus real-time captioning.
- Online survey: Available anytime on the county Public Works ADA project page.
- Paper surveys: Hard copies in English and Spanish will be available starting Friday, August 7, at eight Marin County Free Library branches. The Corte Madera and Novato branches are temporarily closed. Surveys can also be requested by mail.
- Email: Comments can be sent directly to the county's ADA coordinator.
Translations into languages beyond English and Spanish are available by request. Residents who need a disability accommodation to join an open house should call 415-473-4381 (Voice), dial 711 for California Relay, or submit a request online at least five business days before the session.
The county has not announced when the completed plan will go before the Board of Supervisors for adoption. The final open house is Saturday, August 29.
