Marin Catholic carries a five-touchdown performance into a rematch Friday when the Wildcats travel to Acalanes for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Lafayette.

The game revisits last season's North Coast Section Open/Division I playoff first round, which Acalanes won 51-21. The Dons scored the final 23 points that night after MC hung around into the fourth quarter.

Acalanes senior quarterback Tyler Winkles was the difference. He threw for 334 yards and five touchdowns and added 71 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground. MC had no answer for him, the Marin Independent Journal reported.

Winkles has picked up where he left off. In a Week 2 loss to St. Ignatius, he threw for 375 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns in a 42-38 game. Acalanes (2-1) is averaging 38 points per game through three weeks. Acalanes opened the season with wins over Archbishop Mitty (35-14) and Menlo-Atherton (41-13) before the St. Ignatius loss, according to MaxPreps.

MC (1-2) enters on different footing than last year's playoff meeting. Quarterback Dylan Skrinar had five total touchdowns in the Wildcats' Sept. 11 win over Edison, rushing for three and throwing for two. Running back Dayton Trammell ran for a career-high 117 yards on 26 carries in that 37-31 victory. MC's other loss this season came against Monte Vista, 27-10, according to MaxPreps.

"The two losses were good for us. We needed it," Skrinar told the Marin IJ after the Sept. 11 Edison game. "We knew we could be so much better than we were the first two weeks."

The common-opponent thread is worth noting. St. Ignatius beat MC 42-7 in Week 1. Acalanes lost to the same St. Ignatius squad 42-38 a week later. The Dons held much closer against a team that routed the Wildcats.

MC coach Mazi Moayed said after the Sept. 11 Edison win that his team learned from those early losses. The run-first approach that produced Trammell's breakout game and 212 total rushing yards on 47 carries kept MC in control of the clock against Edison's speed.

Around San Rafael

San Rafael (3-0) is on a bye in Week 3. The Bulldogs return to action Sept. 25 at Bethel.

Terra Linda (2-1) faces a stiff test Saturday, Sept. 19, at Lowell (3-0) in San Francisco, with a 2 p.m. kickoff. The Trojans scored five rushing touchdowns in a 39-20 win over St. Patrick/St. Vincent in Week 2, with running back Jake Rehfeldt topping 120 yards and scoring three times. Lowell counters with its own ground game. Running back Preston Wong had a combined 405 yards and four touchdowns through his first two games. Lowell has completed just six passes for 82 yards through two wins.
