San Rafael drivers heading into San Francisco will lose southbound lanes on the Golden Gate Bridge starting Monday, Aug. 17, as the bridge district begins pothole and asphalt repairs that will stretch into November.
Two southbound lanes will close each weekday from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 17, through Thursday, Aug. 20, according to a Golden Gate Bridge District advisory published Wednesday, Aug. 12. Two lanes will remain open in each direction during the work, but the district warned drivers should expect slowdowns around construction zones and possible delays.
The closures fall outside peak morning and evening rush hours but will affect anyone making a midday southbound crossing.
Full schedule
The district has planned four rounds of closures, each running Monday through Thursday:
- Aug. 17–20
- Sept. 7–10
- Oct. 5–8
- Nov. 2–5
That's 16 closure days total. Work is expected to wrap up by 2 p.m. each day, when the bridge returns to its normal three-lane-per-direction setup.
Weather could cancel work
Bridge staff will check traffic and weather conditions each morning before implementing the closure and will cancel work if necessary, the district said. Traffic control and signage will be in place during all maintenance periods.
Transit alternative
San Rafael commuters who want to skip the construction zone have a bus option. Golden Gate Transit Route 101 runs every 15 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes all day between the San Rafael Transit Center and San Francisco. Riders can call 511 or 415-455-2000 for trip-planning help.
The district's advisory did not include estimated delay times or specific alternate driving routes. Drivers can check goldengate.org for updates.
