San Rafael families can grab a blanket and catch a movie under the stars for free this fall, with four Friday-night screenings spread across neighborhood parks starting Aug. 28.

The city's Parks and Recreation department announced the return of its Movies in the Park series on Tuesday, Aug. 4, with films running through Oct. 9. Each screening lands in a different neighborhood, and all four movies are rated G or PG.

Here's the full schedule:

  • Friday, Aug. 28: Ratatouille at Victor Jones Park
  • Friday, Sept. 11: Zootopia 2 at Sun Valley Park
  • Friday, Sept. 25: The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants at Terra Linda Park
  • Friday, Oct. 9: Toy Story 5 (in Spanish) at Pickleweed Park

Movies start roughly 10 minutes after sunset. That means showtime will shift earlier as fall progresses.

The series wraps at Pickleweed Park, 50 Canal Street, with a Spanish-language screening of Toy Story 5 aimed at the Canal neighborhood's majority-Latino community. The Canal area has long faced limited park access, and Pickleweed recently completed a $4.24 million enhancement project funded by a National Park Service Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, adding an all-weather turf soccer field, outdoor basketball court, shaded gazebo and expanded parking.

Library & Recreation Director Catherine Quffa's department runs the series. The city encourages attendees to bring blankets, low chairs, picnic food, snacks and flashlights.

Admission is free. No registration required. All ages welcome.
