Opening night of Roller Disco Daze, Friday, July 17, drew skaters of all ages to Lagoon Island at the Marin County Fairgrounds, 10 Avenue of the Flags.

The event runs Wednesdays through Sundays until August 16, and no reservations are required.

Marin Center is presenting the pop-up rink in partnership with the Church of 8 Wheels Roller Disco, a San Francisco-based organization that has brought roller events to Coachella and Burning Man. D. Miles Jr., known as San Francisco's "Godfather of Skate," is hosting.

Admission is free. Skate rentals, including children's sizes, cost $5. All skaters must sign a waiver, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian's signature.

The rink sits on Lagoon Island beneath a disco ball, surrounded by the lagoon. Beyond the skating, visitors can try lawn games, snap a photo inside a giant inflatable skate, and browse art installations by local artists. Julia Dvorin's interactive "Spoon House," a structure decorated floor-to-ceiling with thousands of spoons, is on display for the full run. The piece was funded by a Marin Cultural Association arts grant.

Food from Manny's Tacos is available every day the rink is open. Lobo's Ice Cream returns July 24–26.

Certified instructors the organizers call "Apostles" patrol the floor for safety. Skaters move counterclockwise, with beginners in the inner lanes and faster skaters on the outside. No food, drinks, or gum are allowed on the rink surface.

Opening night's theme was "Boogie Wonderland," a 1970s skate night. Every Friday through Sunday features a DJ starting at noon and a themed session.

The schedule runs:

  • July 24–26: Neon Nights (rainbow roll, EDM glow skate, neon party)
  • July 31–Aug. 2: Main Character Energy (superheroes vs. villains, Y2K night, Barbiecore)
  • Aug. 7–9: Out of This World (cowboys vs. aliens, Star Wars-inspired, space age)
  • Aug. 14–16: Oh the Horror! (goth, zombie, costume night)

Hours: Wednesdays and Thursdays, noon to 8 p.m. Fridays through Sundays, noon to 10 p.m. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
