A Novato native is running a fast-casual restaurant on Court Street that pairs a fully gluten-free menu with community-access pricing and a workforce inclusion program for neurodivergent employees.

Eric Wright, owner of Humbowl at 1016 Court St., opened the downtown San Rafael location by mid-2025 as the brand's second spot after its original Berkeley outpost. Wright, who has worked in restaurants since age 14, opened the first Humbowl on College Avenue in Berkeley before bringing the concept to his home turf in Marin.

The name blends "humble" and "bowl." Every item on the menu skips wheat, barley, and rye, including the soy sauce. Bowls start with brown rice and quinoa, topped with seasonal vegetables, a choice of protein, and house-made sauces. Desserts contain no refined sugar. The restaurant says it prioritizes seasonal produce and reduced packaging.

A rotating "Seasonabowl" changes with the calendar. The current summer version features corn, Early Girl tomatoes, and basil-cashew pesto. Humbowl also runs a "Collabowl" developed with local partners. A recent collaboration with Metta Yoga, which operates studios in San Rafael, Corte Madera, and Sausalito, produced a bowl with cauliflower, smoked paprika, and tahini goddess sauce.

Neurodivergent hiring program

Wright launched a neurodivergent hiring initiative inspired by his autistic son, Lincoln. According to the restaurant's website, the program started at the Berkeley location and builds roles that "fit people, not the other way around." Wright works closely with families, advocates, and professionals in the autism community to shape the program, the site states.

The Pacific Sun reported in a profile published July 14 that the program is part of the San Rafael operation. Humbowl's website, last updated in February 2026, listed expansion to San Rafael as a goal.

SNAP discounts and hours

Humbowl accepts SNAP/EBT cards at both locations, according to its website. Children under 12 eat free with a valid SNAP card, no purchase necessary. Other SNAP recipients receive 25 percent off for in-store orders.

The restaurant is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. A catering program serves offices, schools, athletic teams, and events.

Wright's stated next step, per the restaurant's website: make the neurodivergent hiring program fully operational at the San Rafael location and every future Humbowl.
