Scott Nichols Gallery has opened at 1310 Fourth Street in downtown San Rafael. The fine art photography gallery brings work by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and other photographers to the city’s main commercial strip.

The Downtown San Rafael Business Improvement District welcomed the gallery in an Oct. 27 announcement. The space sits between C and D streets in what the gallery’s AIPAD member listing describes as “the burgeoning arts district in Central San Rafael.”

Scott Nichols began his career as a private dealer in 1980 and specializes in Group f.64 photography, according to the gallery’s website. He founded the gallery in 1992, according to the same page. The gallery is a member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD).

The collection includes original prints by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Brett Weston, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, Ruth Bernhard, Wynn Bullock and William Garnett. The AIPAD listing also names Henri Cartier-Bresson, Irving Penn and Danny Lyon among the gallery’s listed artists. The gallery sells work by contemporary photographers as well.

The move marks the gallery’s latest relocation. It previously operated in San Francisco before moving to Sonoma Valley in 2019, according to All About Photo. Artnet described the gallery in April as “a hub of fine art photography in the heart of California’s wine country.”

The gallery’s current exhibition, “Group f/64 & Their Contemporaries,” runs through Nov. 7, according to the gallery’s website. The gallery also advertised an Oct. 17 talk by photography scholar Mary Alinder at the new location.

Staff listed on the AIPAD page include Scott Nichols and Christian Peacock. The gallery lists its days as Wednesday through Saturday, according to its contact page, though listed hours vary between sources. Visitors can call 415-788-4641 to confirm hours before stopping by.
