San Rafael High's girls volleyball team lost its fifth straight MCAL (Marin County Athletic League) match Wednesday, Sept. 30, swept by Branson 25-11, 25-4, 25-12.
The Bulldogs dropped to 0-5 in league play despite carrying an 18-9 overall record, a split that underscores the gap between their non-league schedule and MCAL competition. Branson improved to 13-6 overall and 2-1 in league with the win, the Marin Independent Journal reported.
The second set told the story. Branson held San Rafael to just four points.
Head coach Jessica Woodall-Massey has seen the pattern building since the MCAL opener. After that Sept. 18 loss to Archie Williams, she told the Marin Independent Journal her team was working to adjust to league-level play.
"They calmed the ball down a bit better. They got a bit grittier on defense and kept more balls up," Woodall-Massey said after the Archie Williams match. "There's just a lot of firepower on the other side and at some point momentum shifts and there we go."
Five matches into the MCAL season, the Bulldogs are still searching for that first league win.
Marin Catholic hands Terra Linda first league loss
Across town, Marin Catholic swept Terra Linda 25-9, 25-19, 25-18 on Wednesday to hand the Trojans their first MCAL loss of the season. Terra Linda fell to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in league.
Marin Catholic improved to 9-9 overall and 4-0 in MCAL. Redwood also remained unbeaten in league play at 3-0 with a 10-7 overall record.
What's ahead
San Rafael faces a steep climb. The Bulldogs host Marin Catholic on Friday, Oct. 2, then travel to Tamalpais on Wednesday, Oct. 7. With MCAL playoffs set to begin Oct. 20 and six teams qualifying, every remaining match carries seeding weight.
Terra Linda looks to rebound Friday, Oct. 2, against Redwood, followed by Archie Williams on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
